Happy Homemaker 2025-12-29

Last Monday of the year!

Goodbye 2025... it was a rough year (loss of Dad and mom being placed in a home for her Alzheimer's).   Hoping 2026 will be a year of settling down.

Christmas EVE was at dd's this year, we were 26 for supper and evening (roastbeef, mashed potatoes, gravy, pea soup, glazed carrots, ice cream yule logs).  Snacking in the afternoon, veggies, dip, chips, cheese and charcuterie board with some fruits and crackers.  Evening snacking deviled eggs (forgot to take them out in the afternoon), fudge, skors' squares, rice-krispie squares and thumbprint cookies

Me and dh left on the 23rd to go to her place to help her with cleaning up and prepping some food.  DD was working until 3:30 pm.

Was a nice evening and was a nice suprise for the girls - I had bought christmas pj tops for all of them and the Christmas ornament this year was of mom & dad.  Brought a few tears.

Santa and Ms. Clause came to give the young ones a few gifts too.

We went to bed around past 11:00 pm and the latest was 12:15.

Up early on the 25th, sis had brought everything for the breakfast with mimosas (bro had brought the champagne for that).  All had slept over except for 2 nieces, 2 boyfriends and 1 sil.  The others left around 10:30 on the 1st and we left at 11:15 after helping clean up a bit.  DD was going to her in-laws with family for a few days after that (a 2-hour ride). We got back home around 1:15 and unpacked and did laundry and relaxed.

26, 27 was prepping basement for guests on the 31st (and having my IBD flare up those 2 days).  Today was a Costco run (600$!! and missing all the fresh produce for NY's Eve).  Of course there were a few articles of clothing in there and staples that will not be used for NY's Eve.  Got my new costco card as there were not many people.

28 DH went with ds and grandkids to the outdoor skating rink in the afternoon.  Went for hamburgers with sil and bil for supper.  then went to other sil to give gifts to nephew and niece.

29,30 will be prepping food (dh wants to make donuts on the 29th in the morning) and cleaning up main floor and more grocery shopping.

Looking around the house

Basement is looking good.  Still a few things to do on main floor but it's coming along.  Last week to enjoy the Christmas decor.

Thinking and pondering

It was a nice Christmas even though there were 2 little incidents on Christmas Eve that we could've done without.  Wanted to have a toast in Dad's honor but I got deconcentrated with those incidents.

TV this week
  • Christmas programs
  • Hockey documentaries

Interesting blog I saw this week

Nothing

On my reading pile

Le beurre de Manako by Asako Yusuki

On my to-do list

Since our return after Christmas
  • Vac basement
  • Wash basement bathroom
  • Dust all basement
  • Put away toys (there will be 6 little ones here on NY's Eve and do not want it all strewn everywhere ... 2 of these are children of ds's friends and seems they are very active and are quite an armful)
  • Write down the timeline to the 31st
  • Write grocery list for the 31st
  • Costco run
  • Dust all main floor
  • Reorganize tupperwares so they don't fall when we open cabinet door
  • Make space in entry closet for guests' coats
  • Iron dh's shirt
  • Make ice
  • Print some Holiday games
  • Laundry
  • Add toilet paper / soap / kleenex to both bathrooms / check handsoap
Monday
  • Post here - DONE
  • Help dh with donuts?
  • Cook the hard-boiled eggs for the 31st
The big prep day will be the 30th with some leftover for the 31st.

The 31st will be a buffet-style supper with ham sandwiches, chicken salad filled rolls, deviled eggs, veggies and dip, cheese and charcuterie board, chicken wings, bacon/sausages, 1 salad, 2 types of terrines , nachos, 1 tray of fruits, 1 tray of desserts.  DH also wants a veggie soup added to that.   And vaccuming main floor and washing main bathroom (putting away the bathmats), clear off countertops, quick go-through.  And a few will be here for lunch also on the 31st so have a rice/meatball casserole in the freezer.  will add gravy to that.
The 1st - breakfast will be here and some will stay for dinner.
DS has invited us for supper as well as sil.  we will be going to ds'house.

Then the rest of the week will be spent cleaning up, laundry, dedecorating, putting away Christmas, finding my word of the year and writing down some objectives for 2026.  Writing a review of christmas 2025, what worked and what didn't.

Decluttering
  • A tape recorder
  • A wooden rocking horse (given back to dniece), a really nice piece made by an artisan, but it is hers and grandkids do not use it anymore and I don't have space in the basement.
  • 1 clothes shaver given to ddil (had 2)
  • 1 set of Christmas earrings with fur given to dniece (she loves everything furry).

Simple pleasure
Sitting down with a cup of tea and just relaxing.
